Stamford Public Schools Closed from March 13 through March 27

An Important Message to All Parents from Dr. Tamu Lucero, Superintendent of Stamford Public Schools

As you know, this is an unprecedented time for our community and our nation.  As always, the safety and security of our staff and students is our top priority.  The decision to close our schools to students beginning Friday, March 13, until at least Monday, March 30, 2020, was neither easy nor simple.  I have taken into consideration the opinions of experts in the medical field, as well as our obligation to ensure Stamford students are educated, fed and receive the special education services they need.

The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) recommends that if districts make decisions to close school for up to two weeks that those days are made up during vacations or in June.  We are applying for a waiver from the CSDE to obtain approval to count the March days out of school as distance learning school days.  We are working with staff at each building to provide materials for distance learning opportunities for all students.  We need your help to ensure your students are prepared to participate in the educational activities that will be provided to them.  We ask that you contact your school’s principal if your child is in need of a technology device or if they do not receive adequate materials and support for learning. We are currently working with our special education staff to finalize a plan for delivery of support services and those parents will be communicated with directly.

Nurses will be available at their respective schools tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2020, for any parent/guardian who needs to pick up their child’s medication that will be needed during the time school is closed.  We ask if the medication is not essential, i.e. a second supply, it will remain in school with the nurse for when school resumes.  If any parent needs to pick up medication after Friday, March 13, please contact Patricia Caldwell, School Nurse Supervisor at 203-609-5399.

Additionally we will be providing free grab and go meals that can be picked up for anyone in the City of Stamford age 18 and under, at all of our school sites, beginning tomorrow March 13, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Additionally, for families that may be in need of food you may call the City of Stamford Social Services at 203-977-4872 for assistance.

Thank you for your support during this time, and stay well.

Dr. Tamu Lucero
